Learn about Therapist Interns
At RMC Counseling, our therapists hold various degrees and credentials. Some of our clinicians are therapist interns meaning they are nearing completion of a graduate degree in either Social Work or Counseling. We are asked a lot of questions about what this means and this blog post aims to respond to some FAQs about therapist interns.
How is an intern different from other therapists?
Therapist Interns have completed the majority of their education, but gaining real world experience is a requirement for their degree. While all clinicians are required to stay up to date on best practices through continuing education, interns actually have the most recent training and education since they are still in school! RMC also has its own internal, weekly training program for interns that they complete in addition to coursework. While interns of course don’t have the most experience in practicing therapy, they all have years of similar experience in other helping professions.
How long do interns work at RMC?
While it depends on the requirements of their graduate program, most interns are at RMC for around six to nine months and are here a few days each week. While some interns remain at RMC after they finish school, that can’t be guaranteed. However, because of the nature of their position, interns will likely have sooner availability and shorter waitlists to see new clients.
How are interns supervised?
Like other associate clinicians, interns have regular, weekly check ins with their supervisor to discuss their caseload and answer any questions. Our intern cohort also has a weekly meeting. RMC has additional, weekly group consultations that interns are invited to attend. Therapist interns likely work with fewer clients than full time clinicians which means they have more time to focus on their caseload. In short, interns are the most supervised clinicians at RMC and have a lot of opportunities to grow into great full time therapists!
What else should I know about working with a therapist intern?
Interns have the lowest sliding scale rate of any clinician and take health insurance. This means that therapy will cost less when you see an intern. Additionally, given that they are new to the field, interns have an abundance of energy and enthusiasm to learn as much as possible and work hard with you to meet your goals. With up to date training, sooner availability, and a lot of supervision, interns are a great choice as you begin your mental health journey.
